ReadEdenYou know when you are reading an opinion and when you are reading an ad
The Reading Room may include reviews, guides, before-you-read notes and content paid for by partners. These formats serve different purposes. We label them clearly instead of pretending they were all created in the same way.
A review comes after reading the book
A review contains the opinion of someone who has read the whole book. It may discuss the writing, pacing, structure and the reviewer's own experience. We name the reviewer and warn readers before any spoilers.
We also disclose a free review copy supplied by a publisher. A free copy does not buy a favourable verdict or the right to approve the review.
Not every article about a book is a review
A guide, new-release feature or before-you-read note may be based on careful research even when its writer has not read the whole book. It may cover the premise, genre, series, edition, translation and verified context. It must not imitate first-hand experience or judge what the book feels like to read.
We check claims that can be checked. Opinions from publishers, authors or other readers are attributed to them rather than presented as our own.
Sponsored content may be created before we read the book
A publisher, bookseller or author may pay us to introduce a book to a relevant audience. For example, we may present a horror novel to readers interested in horror without first reading the whole book. We will not call that an independent review.
Before the title or at the beginning of the page, we use a clear label such as "Sponsored by [partner name]". We also explain whether the article draws on a review copy, publisher materials or additional research. A partner may agree the topic, scope and publication date. They cannot pay us to hide the relationship or to claim a reading experience we did not have.
Editorial selection and paid placement are different
We choose the books in ordinary editorial coverage. In sponsored content, a title appears because of an agreement with a partner. Readers should know which of these they are looking at before they begin.
We may reject a partnership if the description is misleading, the book is not relevant to ReadEden readers or the partner expects undisclosed advertising. We also reject work that requires us to imitate a personal opinion.
We disclose affiliate links too
Some links to bookshops may earn ReadEden a commission. We explain this before the first affiliate link. It does not change the price of the book.
Affiliate links and sponsorship are not the same. With an affiliate link, we are paid only if a purchase is made. With sponsored content, a partner pays for an agreed publication or placement. If both apply, we disclose both.
Suggestions inside ReadEden
Suggestions in the application use authors and genres found in your library as a starting point, and you can turn them off. If a paid title appears among them in the future, it will be labelled as sponsored directly beside the suggestion. We do not sell an individual's reading history to publishers.
