For restraint and unreliable memory
Choose The Remains of the Day. An English butler looks back on decades of service while a journey unsettles the story he has told himself. Much of the novel's force lies between what Stevens reports and what his account allows the reader to recognise.
For dystopia through intimate lives
Choose Never Let Me Go. Kathy narrates her childhood and friendships with a calm that makes the limits of her world emerge gradually. Read it without searching for a fuller plot summary.
For a stranger register
The Buried Giant uses a legendary Britain, collective forgetting and an older couple's journey. Klara and the Sun is narrated by an Artificial Friend observing human attachment from the edge. Both retain Ishiguro's interest in memory while changing the surface completely.
