The six-book order
Read A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea and The Other Wind. This publication order is also the safest first reading order.
The first trilogy
The first three books follow different centres of gravity within the same archipelago. Ged matters throughout, but Earthsea does not stay limited to a single protagonist or a single kind of adventure.
Tehanu changes the angle
Published many years after the original trilogy, Tehanu returns to familiar lives and asks different questions about power, gender and the people heroic stories leave at the edge. Its change of perspective is deliberate, not a detour.
Why Tales comes before The Other Wind
Tales from Earthsea is a collection, but it is not optional background. Its stories and historical material prepare changes that matter in The Other Wind. Reading the final novel first removes context that Le Guin placed there on purpose.
