Macondo begins as a new settlement
The novel follows the Buendía family in Macondo, a fictional town founded away from established routes. The town changes across generations as new knowledge, trade, institutions and violence arrive.
Names return
José Arcadio and Aureliano recur across the family. This is not a mistake to be corrected by memorising everyone immediately. Keep a family tree nearby if your edition provides one, and pay attention to full names, parents and generation.
History and the marvellous occupy the same world
The phrase magical realism can make the book sound like a collection of decorative wonders. Its extraordinary events are narrated alongside labour, family conflict, war and political violence. The tone does not always tell the reader which kind of event deserves more disbelief.
Read forward before trying to master the whole family
The opening pages do not require a complete map of a century. Let relationships settle as they become active. The repeated names are part of the novel's pattern of inheritance and recurrence, not an entrance exam.
